We recently released an article about the Top 5 Worst Markets for Office Space in the D.C. area. Those areas had the highest vacancy rates in the Washington, D.C. area according to a Transwestern report.

Demand for Class-C and Class-B office space is at near all-time lows and at the same time tenants are adamant about leasing Class-A office space. In some sub markets the demand is so great that Class-A office space available is now below 1 percent.

While the nation's capital continued its usual lead in office space construction, another surprise quarter occurred with the Maryland National Capital region leading the surrounding region.

According to March data from the Bethesda, Mid-Atlantic regional office of Transwestern and its research subsidiary, Alexandria-based Delta Associates, there was an estimated 7,204,726 square feet of office space under construction or reconstruction in the D.C. area.

Herndon-based Volkswagen of America reported its percent best monthly March sales total since 1973. The German automaker was able to increase sales by 34.6 percent but this time led by more than one model line surpassing the 10k mark.

Volkswagen of America sold 36,588 units; it is the sixth month that the automaker surpassed at least a 30 percent increase in sales and the 31st consecutive month of sales increases.

federal government allowed 96 percent of the office space under construction in the Maryland National Capital Region to be pre-leased

With a big help from the federal government, Maryland's "economic engine", Montgomery County, has managed to lead all jurisdictions outside the district in office space construction -- with nearly all of Montgomery County's primary office markets participating.

The latest data from Transwestern Mid-Atlantic with headquarters in Bethesda, shows office space construction in the county stands at nearly 2 million square feet, that puts it ahead of surrounding area jurisdictions including Fairfax and Arlington counties in Virginia.

Fairfax County Director of Public Affairs, Merni Fitzgerald is refuting claims made by a Washington Examiner newspaper editorial that the Dulles rail project is no longer on schedule, is over budget, and lacks transparency to the public.

The statement was posted on the Fairfax County government website calling the editorial titled "Airports authority head lied, and transparency died", a piece full of inaccuracies and stating opinions as facts.

The 30-year veteran announced September 15 that he would take a leave of absence.

McLean-based Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) reported Craig A. Dubow, chairman and chief executive officer, will officially resign his post due to disability from a debilitating medical condition. The 30-year veteran previously announced September 15 that he would take a leave of absence.

Dubow will be replaced by Marjorie Magner and Gracia Martore who will become chairman and CEO respectively.

General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and Tognum America, Inc, were awarded as a group -- a $439.7 Million contract from the U.S. Army.

The team of federal defense contracts will work on the Technology Development (TD) phase of the U.S. Army's Ground Combat Vehicle(GCV) Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) program. It is expected that the results will produce affordable and effective Infantry Fighting Vehicle within a time-frame of seven years.

Virginia and Maryland were amongst the 28 states that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said had their jobless rates increase in July 2011. Along with D.C., the jurisdictions with jobless rate increases totaled 29.

The bureau also said nine states had rate decreases and 13 had virtually zero change in their unemployment rate.

But Maryland and Virginia posted small rate increases while the District of Columbia showed a rate change that was much higher than in June 2011.
