While the nation's capital continued its usual lead in office space construction, another surprise quarter occurred with the Maryland National Capital region leading the surrounding region.

According to March data from the Bethesda, Mid-Atlantic regional office of Transwestern and its research subsidiary, Alexandria-based Delta Associates, there was an estimated 7,204,726 square feet of office space under construction or reconstruction in the D.C. area.

Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE: LMT) has signed an agreement with the intent to acquire QTC Holdings Inc -- a health care federal contractor.

The Diamond Bar, California company is the largest service provider of medical evaluations. QTC's clients include the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The company processed more than 450,000 evaluations for the department in 2010.

Mclean-based Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) was one of two defense firms that won a contract from the U.S. Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SSC) Atlantic.

Under the contract agreement SAIC will provide worldwide command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) services to help the United States Navy and Joint C4ISR systems.

Despite recession, several Maryland Biotechs turn a profit

Biotechnology firms have been reported to be hard hit by the recent recession; struggling to stay afloat amid a dearth of venture capital funding and and lack of new drugs selling on the market. The Biotech industry is often pigeonholed as frail, cash strapped and high risk; spending years on research to develop drugs but often ending with failure and bankruptcy.

But in Maryland it's a different story. Several biotech firms have achieved profitability for their full fiscal year and some of them for the first time in the midst of a troubled U.S. economy.

Biodefense company Emergent BioSolutions (NYSE: EBS) won a large Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) contract to treat Ebola Monoclona.

The contract is the company's first BARDA Task Order to create an Ebola treatment under the Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing (CIADM) program. BARDA is an authority under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Lockheed Martin is making a strategic move to not only grow in the relatively new cyber security sector but also diversify its services beyond Federal government contracts. The U.S. Federal government is in the midst of cutting defense spending and dumping large amounts of office space in favor of smaller spaces in the Washington, D.C. area.

Baltimore-based Under Armour, Inc (NYSE: UA) ended yesterday’s trading session in new territory. Before the previous day’s market open the company reported fourth quarter 2014 financial results that exceeded expectations from analysts.

For the first time in its history Under Armour crossed the $10 billion threshold in market capitalization and settled even higher at just over $11 billion at market close and $104.76 per share.

Baltimore-based Under Armour, Inc (NYSE: UA) surprised analysts with much higher revenue and profit than predicted for the fourth quarter of 2013.

The apparel and shoe maker that is continuously growing in popularity, added $64 million more to its revenue than what analysts had believed would be reported.

The average estimate of 28 analysts was $619 million, Under Armour beat those numbers with a showing of $683 million, an increase of 35%.

Biotechnology company, Emergent BioSolutions (NYSE:EBS) announced today that Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) has terminated an agreement between the two companies to develop and commercialize its TRU-016 program. The program is expected to eventually lead to the therapeutic drugs for lymphocytic leukemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Lockheed Martin will supply spare units and parts and says the TSS will include state-of-the-art functionality

Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) was awarded two contracts from the Naval Surface Warfare Center for the targeting system on U.S. Marine Corps Helicopters.

The $30.6 million contracts are part of an effort to provide services and support to the U.S. Marine Corps’ AH-1Z Cobra attack helicopters fire control system, known as the Target Sight System or TSS.
