Volkswagen Sales Up 47.9 Percent in January 2012, Passat Increases Over 8,200 Percent (With Sales Chart)

Volkswagen's U.S. operations based in Herndon, reported 47.9 percent increase in sales to start off the 2012 calendar year. The 27,209 units sold was the best on record since 1974.

Sales were led by volume leader Jetta, the sedan variant had 9,564 units sold but that was 1.8 percent lower than in January 2011. Overall Jetta sales including SportsWagen were 10,962 units, down 4.3 percent.

The Passat, now built in Chattanooga, Tenn., regained second place in sales volume with 6,318 units sold. The model's sales gain was the largest contributor to Volkswagen's January sales surge with an 8,213.2 percent increase for the sedan.

The new Beetle Coupe was another model to post a gain of over 1,000 percent. The latest version of the iconic car had sales of 1,401, up 1209.3 percent compared to 107 in the same month of 2011.

"We ended 2011 strong and are seeing the momentum continue into 2012 with a 47.9 percent increase, demonstrating our growth strategy continues to take root," stated Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. "With the today's release of our much-anticipated Game Day ad, 'The Dog Strikes Back,' our relentless focus on the core pillars of the business, and a full line-up of new and refreshed vehicles, Volkswagen is off to a strong start in 2012."
