Herndon-based Volkswagen of America reported its percent best monthly March sales total since 1973. The German automaker was able to increase sales by 34.6 percent but this time led by more than one model line surpassing the 10k mark.
Volkswagen of America sold 36,588 units; it is the sixth month that the automaker surpassed at least a 30 percent increase in sales and the 31st consecutive month of sales increases.
The usual sales leader, Jetta model line sold 14,966 including SportWagen. That was down 1.8 percent from 16,969 in March 2011. The redesigned Passat made up for the Jetta's decrease with 10,032 units sold, a 33,340.0 percent increase from only 30 sold in March 2011. Because of the increased demand of the Passat, Volkswagen recently announced it would add 800 jobs to its Chattanooga manufacturing plant.
”March’s strong sales of 36,588 units highlights a robust first quarter for 2012 for Volkswagen and we are poised for continued growth this calendar year,” proclaimed Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “Two years ago, we sold 10,168 Passat sedans for the year, and now we’ve broken the 10,000 barrier for the month! The new Passat has become a true success story, and it’s having a great impact across our company here in the US.”
Year-to-date sales totaled 67,039 a 40.8 percent increase. Wolfsburg,Germany-based Volkswagen AG (PINK:VLKAY) is the parent company of its subsidiary, Volkswagen of America.
