Lockheed Martin Eliminates 540 Jobs from Aeronautics Division

Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) said it will lay off 540 employees from its aeronautics division sites across the country.

The defense giant said the layoffs are part of the company's goal to increase operational efficiency. The greatest impact would be felt in Fort Worth, Tx., Marietta, Ga., as well as Palmdale, Ca.

Lockheed Martin employs about 28,000 people in its aeronautics division, the 540 position reduction would be about 2% of that workforce. Employees affected are expected to be moved out by December's end.

In June 2011, announced that it would eliminate around 1,500 positions by the end of the year. 450 employees have already applied voluntary leave and 300 open positions have already been cut.
