The Large Company that isn’t on the Washington Post’s Post 200 List

The Washington Post’s Capital Business section released its Post 200 mid-month. The local business report includes a variety of lists, ranking local companies in the D.C. area (and part of the Baltimore area as well) from largest by industry to largest by revenue for example.

Market capitalization was another ranking category included in this year's Post 200 lists. Included in a graphic labeled “Sizing Up the Post 200” are local companies with a headquarters in the D.C. area ranked by market capitalization. Also known as market value, market capitalization is arguably one of the best measures of a publicly traded company’s worth because more often than not, a company being scooped up in merger looks to this figure as their selling price.

This year’s top 10 was capped by Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) making it the largest company in the D.C. area, with a market cap of approximately $54 billion as of the Post 200 list collection of data ending September 30, 2014 (as of the publishing of this article Lockheed Martin is worth approximately $62 billion).

But missing from the list is not your typical D.C. defense contractor but a large financial institution.

Capital One Financial Corp (NYSE:COF) -- recognizable by television ads that have included actors like Samuel L. Jackson -- should actually slide into third place on the Post 200 list. The company has a market cap of approximately $46 billion today and has fluctuated close to that market cap as far back September 30, 2014.

With the missing company included in our list below, the top 10 ranking knocks out Arlington County-based AES Corp (NYSE: AES). Also worth noting is that all of the companies in the list are also in the Fortune 500 except for AvalonBay Communities (NYSE: AVB).
