Federal Realty Investment Trust Goes Green with Solar Installations

Rockville-based Federal Realty Investment Trust (NYSE: FRT) is set to install solar panels at four of its New Jersey properties once it gets zoning approval.

Roof-mounted solar panels will be installed at the Brick Plaza and Troy Hills shopping centers. The Mercer Mall and Ellisburg Circle shopping centers will get both roof and ground mounted solar panels.

Overall, there will be a total of 512,000 square feet of space utilized for solar panel installation, with 400,000 square feet dedicated to roof installation and 112,000 square feet dedicated to ground installation. The panels will generate 4.2 megawatts of power, providing tenants 20 percent of their energy needs.

Federal Realty utilized New York-based Safari Energy to implement the overall solar panel project.
