BWI Marshall Ranks As Busiest Airport in the Washington, D.C. Area

The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport had a total of 22,498,353 commercial passengers flow through its gates in 2013 making it – once again – the busiest airport in the Washington, D.C. area.

Linthicum, Maryland-located BWI Marshall Airport, topped Dulles Airport which straddles the borders of Fairfax and Loudon counties in Virginia, as well as National Airport in Arlington County, Virginia.

In December 2013 BWI Marshall Airport increased total passengers 6.8 percent to 1,833,810. At Dulles Airport total commercial passenger volume actually fell 1 percent to 1,746,234 trailing BWI by nearly 100,000 passengers. Normally in last place, National increased 4.7 percent to 1,627,180 passengers.

For 2013 BWI Marshall Airport had the largest market share luring 34.8 percent of passengers which was off slightly at 0.8 percent but Dulles Airport lost 2.7 percent market share, down to 33.7 percent compared to 34.6 percent in 2012. National Airport gained market share with 31.5 percent.
