The American Film Institute calls it the most talked about documentary film festival in the United States.

Only in its ninth running, SILVERDOCS is a celebration of the art of independent film making presented by AFI and Discovery Communication's flagship network Discovery Channel. Both organizations have their headquarters in downtown Silver Spring.

The event will take place at the historic Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, the main theater of AFI.

Last year more 27,000 attendees went to the event, with movie showings from over 60 countries, making it one of the most patronized film festivals in the nation and a big boost to Montgomery County's tourism industry.

The Silverdocs festival will run from June 20th to the 26th, 2011. Some documentary highlights include BEING ELMO: A PUPPETEER'S JOURNEY. Baltimore native Kevin Clash's story is narrated by Whoopi Goldberg as she talks about the man behind the Sesame Street character Elmo.
